Toronto Police Services Board has announced to have reappointed Dr. Alok Mukherjee as chair of the seven-member board. The decision was taken during the boards’ first meeting of the year at Toronto Police Headquarters. Whereas a vice-chair is expected to be announced soon later today.
There was a lot of confusion and several even predicted that Mukherjee would not be reappointed after facing extreme criticism for numerous Facebook posts related to the killings in the U.S. to terrorism and Ebola, along with others regarding spousal abuse. Commenting on the announcement, Toronto Police Association President, Mike McCormack, alleged that Mukherjee is “irrelevant” since “he is the chair of a board, it is not an individual. We will work with the entire board… and there are adults on the board that behave in an appropriate way.” McCormack added that “we are pleased to see some of the changes on that board and we are looking forward to going through the talks and having the negotiations in the proper form at the bargaining table.”
Prior to the meeting, Coun. Shelley Carroll alleged that board should keep Mukherjee around in order to make it easier to replace Chief Blair. She explained that “we have made a big refresh in that Mayor Tory and myself are brand new to the board and we have been working on a change to the dynamics while still furthering important initiatives that were started last term. There is change ongoing and we have to work together to find a chief that will be an agent of change and we need some experience to do that.”
