A jury has found a Winnipeg woman accused of running over a man with a minivan guilty of manslaughter as the court heard that she did so intentionally at the age of 17. As a result of the accident, 40-year-old Marcel Murdoch passed away and his 24-year-old son received serious injuries.

The court has heard that a tremendously violent brawl took place at Garfield Street house party in the city’s West End, where witnesses claim that items like bricks, hockey sticks and bear spray were being used as weapons. The accused, who cannot be named due to her age at the time of incident, has already admitted that she ran over the two men but has alleged innocence in the court stressing that it was an accident. During her own testimony, the accused said she was afraid of getting hurt in the melee and she didn’t see the two men.

Whereas on the other hand, the Crown pointed out that the suspect in fact acted intentionally and targeted the father and son after a series of altercations they both had with her boyfriend. In addition to that, the court heard that Hanslip and the suspect had rammed into each other’s vehicles on the street, after which Hanslip jumped out and was standing beside his father when they were hit. Murdoch died at the spot whereas Hanslip had to be shifted to the hospital with a leg wound and spinal injuries. Hanslip spent almost six months recovering from the incident and had to remain in a wheelchair for another six months.
