Convicted child molester and former Roman Catholic priest, Eric Dejaeger, apologized for his crimes at the end of his sentence hearing on Jan. 22, while apologizing for forgiveness in a court filled with many of his sexual abuse victims. Dejaeger has been convicted on 32 counts, majority of which are sex crimes committed against Inuit children in Igloolik between 1976 and 1982.

In his final remarks, Dejaeger looked directly at Justice Robert Kilpatrick and said that “I ask forgiveness. I promise not to re-offend again,” while choosing not to look at the more than two dozen victims sitting in court behind him. He said that “I followed extensive counseling for sex offenders and I will not re-offend.” Crown prosecutor, Doug Curliss, is seeking a 25-year jail sentence, minus about eight years for the four years of hard time Dejaeger has spent in custody, for Kilpatrick. Whereas, Defence lawyer, Malcolm Kempt, argued that Dejaeger should be given a global sentence of 12 years, minus time served.

According to Justice Kilpatrick, he will hopefully try to issue a sentence decision in about two weeks, though it might take longer. He stressed that “I do not wish to rush to judgment.” Furthermore, Kilpatrick added that he will not be reading an oral judgment in court, but will rather issue a written judgment electronically, with copies to be distributed in Igloolik. He has asked Dejaeger to return to court on March 3 at 9:30 p.m., which is when the judgment is anticipated to be released.
