A Progressive Conservative MLA for Spruce Grove-St. Albert and former finance minister, Doug Horner, has announced to retire from politics on Thursday “with mixed emotions” after 14 years in public service. Most recently, Mr. Horner was serving as the senior adviser to the premier on internal trade and federal and provincial relations.

First elected to the Legislature in 2001, Horner has had the experience to work as a deputy premier, minister of agriculture, advanced education and technology, president of the treasury board and minister of finance. He ran unsuccessfully for the PC leadership in 2011. According to the announcement, Horner will spend his last day in office on Jan. 31. He mentioned in his Facebook post that “alongside my legislature colleagues, and under the leadership of five premiers, I have seen our great province make tremendous strides, overcome unparalleled challenges and benefit from unprecedented growth,” adding that “I am proud to have a place in our provincial history books, and to have carried on my family’s legacy of public service to Alberta.”

In his remarks, Horner alleged to be looking forward to return to the private sector while promising to remain a committed PC party member and declaring full confidence in the leadership of Premier Jim Prentice. He alleged that “while it is with some sadness that I say goodbye to the many friends and colleagues with which I have been blessed during my time as an elected official, I know that our province is in good hands.”
