Winnipeg Mayor Brian Bowman and an array of politicians, academics, indigenous leaders and community activists are anticipated to issue their comments over Maclean’s magazine issue released on Thursday, which claimed Winnipeg to be the most racist city in Canada. The front page of the issue warned Winnipeg and Canada that “Canada has a bigger race problem than America and it’s ugliest in Winnipeg.”

Grand Chief Derek Nepinak, NDP cabinet minister Kevin Chief, the mother of Rinelle Harper, are some of the many names that are anticipated to address the media on Thursday afternoon. The article highlights the recent headlines involving First Nations people which grabbed national attention, including the death of 15-year-old Tina Fontaine, the brutal assault of 16-year-old Rinelle Harper, and the inquiry into the death of Brian Sinclair. The article’s author, Nancy Macdonald, stated that “the events of last fall served to expose a darker reality. The Manitoba capital is deeply divided along ethic lines” adding that “it is quickly becoming known for the subhuman treatment of its First Nations citizens.”

The article has mostly used survey statistics on racism that found both Saskatchewan and Manitoba as the worst offenders, while pointing out that Winnipeg has the highest proportion of racist tweets of the six Canadian cities known for high levels of hate crime. It continues on to look at the divide in income, hospitalization rates for violent, drop-out rates between North End residents and the rest of the city.
