The mayor of Winnipeg, Brian Bowman, admitted in a press release on Thursday that racism against Aboriginal people is a big problem in the city. They mayor summoned an array of noticeable social, political and cultural leaders in his office with only an hour’s notice and highlighted that racism is a problem nationwide, not just in Winnipeg. In addition to that, the mayor also acknowledged that the Treaty 1 Metis land.

The meeting was called by the mayor soon after he read the claim made on the cover of Maclean’s magazine, published on Thursday, which said that “Canada has a bigger race problem than America. And it’s ugliest in Winnipeg.” In his remarks, the mayor said he hopes that Winnipeg can now “lead the nation” in eradicating racism. He stated that “racism and intolerance exists in every community, but we do have a problem in Winnipeg,” adding that “instead of shrinking from the challenge, we need to rise up and we need to do better as a community.”

The article published in recent Maclean’s magazine issue highlighted the death of 15-year-old Aboriginal girl, Tina Fontaine, last summer has forced the city of 633,000 to face its “festering” racism. The magazine displayed an Indigenous writer, Rosanna Deerchild, on the cover and quotes her saying that she is routinely called a “stupid squaw.” Mr. Bowman stated that “we’re here together to face this head-on as one community.”
