Winnipeg Mayor, Brian Bowman, announced issuance of first-ever boil water advisory for all of Winnipeg on Tuesday, explaining that the officials have detected several positive test results showing the presence of E. coli. During a press conference at around 6 p.m., Mayor Bowman alleged that “in abundance of caution, and because of our city experts and engineers understanding of the water distribution system, the City of Winnipeg has decided to implement a boil water advisory for the entire city of Winnipeg.”

According to the city, the boil-water advisory is a mere precautionary since six water samples tested on Monday were positive for the presence of E. coli and coliform at very low levels. Mayor Bowman assured that “hopefully we will find out that these were false positives tomorrow and very soon thereafter we will be able to lift this notice, but we do need to be cautious.” An initial advisory for the area east of the Red River was issued by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority initially at around 5:23 p.m. However, later city officials expanded the advisory for the whole city at around 6 p.m., explaining that one of the positive tests was from the city’s southwest.

An official statement issued by the WRHA said that “there has been no source of contamination identified to date; however, public health is proceeding according to provincial and national guidelines. These guidelines specify to issue the advisory as a precautionary measure, while investigating the possible causes.”
