Almost all Canada’s provincial and territorial leaders convened in downtown Ottawa on Friday for a meeting focusing largely on the economy. Although Prime Minister Stephen Harper failed to make it to the meeting, federal Finance Minister Joe Oliver was three to warn the premiers from jumping into costly new deficit spending programs that might sink provinces further into deficit.

The Council of the Federation winter meeting was chaired by Prince Edward Island Premier, Robert Ghiz, and focused on several subjects including health care and aging, labour mobility and federal-provincial fiscal arrangements. In addition to that, the premiers are also slated to debate, either at the table or on the side lines, the proposed TransCanada Energy East oilsands pipeline from Alberta to the East Coast. Whereas on the other hand, a group of environmental and civil society groups are planning to hold a protest outside the venue in order to raise their voice against Energy East’s impact on climate change.

In addition to that, vice-chair of BMO Financial Group and former Clerk of the Privy Council in Harper’s government, Kevin Lynch, is also scheduled to give a presentation to the premiers regarding economy on Friday. The meeting is scheduled to end with a news conference at 3 p.m. According to Ghiz, “I am pleased to chair the winter meeting of Canada’s Premiers where we will discuss issues that are important to enhancing the lives of Canadians.” It was added that “I look forward to leading discussions on jobs and the economy, and other issues of importance to Canadians.”
