Former fisheries union president, Earle McCurdy, has taken over the NDP leadership with an overwhelming victory on late Saturday afternoon with 889 votes. Whereas McCurdy’s opponents only managed to secure mediocre 299 and 110 votes by Mike Goosney and Chris Bruce respectively.

Addressing the audience at the Sheraton Hotel after the victory, McCurdy immediately looked ahead to the next general election. In his remarks McCurdy alleged that a week is a long time in politics, and since there are months between now and the election it practically amounts to an eternity. He stressed that “we have momentum, I believe, on our side now.” McCurdy has his work cut out for him in the coming months.

Quite noticeably, the NDP has been on a public opinion roller coaster for the last few years. The party managed to achieve its best ever election result in 2011, along with briefly achieving the first place in public opinion polling few years following that. However, the NDP faced a messy caucus revolt that to two MHAs crossing the floor to the Liberals in the fall of 2013. Consequently, the move damaged the party’s public credibility and perceived competence, while dropping the New Democrat candidates to a distant third position in a string of byelections. However, the party members were optimistic during the convention this weekend, highlighting that the change in leadership is anticipated to finally turn the page and allow the party to get fair hearing from voters when they talk about their public policy issues.
