A global organization that campaigns for responsible whale watching has called the death of a Canadian tourist off the coast of Mexico, when a grey whale came crashing on a tour boat on Wednesday, a unprecedented freak accident. U.K.-based World Cetacean Alliance’s Dylan Walker stated that “I was really shocked when I heard about this news. In terms of my personal awareness I think this is the first time that a whale or dolphin in the wild, as part of a whale-watching trip, has actually accidentally killed somebody.”

Walker highlighted that “bearing in mind, there are 3,300 plus whale- and dolphin-watching companies around the world in over 120 countries and overseas territories who go out to see these animals every day for six months out of 12 months of the year – so a huge amount interaction between people and whales and dolphins.” Meanwhile, Mexican authorities explained the accident took place while a tour boat carrying whale watchers was returning to resort city of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. The Canadian woman involved in the case has not been publicly identified as yet.

According to a previous statement, quoted by Associated Press, the tour company, Cabo Adventures, said that the accident took place close to the beach. The statement “The captain had to make a movement to avoid a whale that surfaced just in front of the boat,” adding that “the whale hit one side of the boat, leaving two people injured and another passenger hurt who, unfortunately, later died in hospital.”
