The Edmonton Police Service has charged a suspect in a homicide case dating back to 1997.

Darren Jason Young, 37, has been charged with second degree murder and possession of a prohibited weapon in connection with the murder of James Milliken, 23, on May 17, 1997. Young was 19-years-old at the time of the offence.

New information was received that allowed investigators to issue a warrant for Young’s arrest. The Medicine Hat Police Service took Young into custody yesterday (Thursday, Mar. 12, 2015) at approximately 3:15 p.m. in Medicine Hat.

“The arrest and laying of a second degree murder charge against the person police believe killed our brother, James Milliken, comes as a great relief and will hopefully provide us answers to questions we have; questions that have haunted us for years,” says James Milliken’s family.

“The arrest will not help us deal with our grief – there is no justice. Jimmy is dead but perhaps some closure can now begin. We are forever grateful for the 23 years that we had him and he will remain loved and always remembered, not for the way he died but for the way he lived… with laughter and love for his children, his family and his friends.”

“We would like to thank the Edmonton Police Service for their kindness while dealing with us and for their determination, even after 17 years, to catch the person responsible for Jimmy’s death.”

Background:

On the evening of May 16, 1997, James Milliken, 23, spent the evening socializing at an establishment in the area of 118 Avenue and 34 Street. At approximately 1:30 a.m. on May 17, 1997, Milliken and a small group of friends left the establishment and walked through a parking lot in the area.

They encountered another group of young people and allegedly became involved in verbal altercation that escalated to a physical altercation. During the altercation, Milliken was stabbed. He was treated and transported to hospital by EMS where he died shortly thereafter.

Sufficient grounds to convict a suspect were not successfully established at the time. The case remained open with the Edmonton Police Service Homicide Unit.
