NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has announced two newest candidates for the NDP to be former judges from British Columbia. Mulcair hailed two additions to his party on Thursday whom he hope will help him oppose the government's controversial anti-terror bill; namely former judges Carol Baird Ellan and Bill Sundhu. He mentioned in a statement that "the choice we're offering to Canadians is clear: you have the option of a principled, experienced team to replace Stephen Harper.”

According to Baird Ellan’s profile, she has served as a judge in provincial court for two decades and later became the first woman to be appointed chief judge. Whereas on the other hand, Sundhu is a human rights lawyer who was also a provincial court judge. However, Sundhu resigned in November 2007 after Chief Provincial Court Judge, Hugh Stansfield, conducted an investigation that found Sundhu made offensive remarks to staff and guests at the hotel and was aggressive with police. Quite noticeably, the charge of creating a disturbance was stayed against Sundhu and he was allowed to make reparations through community service.

In response to several media sources highlighting Subdhu’s past, the NDP gave a humble remark confirming the news. Party spokesman, George Soule, mentioned in a tweet posted late in the day: "Certainly not a secret. Nor has he ever hidden from it." The tweet included links to two articles that praise Sundhu's rehabilitation, including attending Alcoholics Anonymous and writing apologies to everyone involved in the hotel fracas.
