Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has confirmed to have been looking into a police-related death in Mississauga Friday night, however the agency claims that it is not mandated to look into the injuries two officers suffered in the same incident. According to the police watchdog agency, the officers arrived at a unit on Queen Frederica Dr. at about 10:40 p.m. after getting a call that explained “there was an interaction between police and a 30-year-old male, and he was shot multiple times.” SIU’s statement issued on Saturday morning confirmed that “he was pronounced dead at the scene.”
SIU’s initial report has concluded that the two officers, along with one civilian, suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident but the agency will only be able to investigate police shooting as “per the SIU mandate.” The SIU is an arm’s-length agency that investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. According to the neighbors around the crime scene, they heard gunshots coming from the home at around 10:30 p.m.
The agency has confirmed to have assigned five investigators and three forensic investigators to the incident. It mentioned in a statement that “at this time, three subject officers and seven witness officers have been designated.” Whereas Peel police confirmed the provincial agency has taken over the investigation, revealing that one of the injured officers has been shot and the other was stabbed. The injured civilian, reportedly involved in the confrontation as well, was taken to hospital with undisclosed injuries.
