Authorities have confirmed the details of today’s incident when an Air Canada flight skidded off the runway during a clash landing due to the snowstorm in Halifax early Sunday. The incident led to more than 23 shaken passengers and crew sent to local hospital with minor injuries. Passengers explain that the plane hit the runway hard at Stanfield International Airport at about 12:45 a.m. local time, after which it skidded on its belly for about 30 seconds before it came to a halt. Thereafter, the passengers immediately evacuated the plane through emergency hatches and escaped the volatile crash site.

According to Airport spokesperson, Peter Spurway, it’s unclear whether the runway conditions were a contributing factor to the rough landing. However, he explained that “it came down pretty hard and then skidded off the runway.” Meanwhile, Air Canada explained in a tweet that the plane had “exited” the runway. Whereas according to the airline, 133 passengers and five crew were on board.

One of the passengers on board explained that they were afraid that the plane might catch fire or explode on the runway because “there was a liquid and it smelled like kerosene.” It was explained that “there were sparks and there was smoke, so we were worried about it.” Pictures show that the aircraft left a trail of debris on the runway, as witnesses explain that one wing and engine were severely damaged, and one of the aircraft’s tires came off.
