Toronto’s former police chief, Bill Blair, has won the Liberal nomination for the riding of Scarborough Southwest and will now run for the party in the next federal election. Blair outvoted four rivals to secure the nomination on Saturday afternoon. However, former TV reporter Tim Weber had already withdrawn from the race last month and announced his support for Blair.

Currently, the city’s east riding is held by NDP’s Dan Harris. However, prior to the 2011 election, the Scarborough Southwest was a Liberals stronghold as Tom Wappel held the seat from 1997 to 2008, followed by Michelle Simson who won the seat in 2008.

In addition to ten-year service as Toronto Police Chief, Blair served on the Toronto police force for many years before that. Shortly after retiring earlier this year, he said he was turning to politics. In his nomination speech on Saturday, Blair stated that “I have served this city for nearly four decades” adding that “having spent my life in public service, and concluding that career, I sought to continue to serve. To continue to serve this community not only to make it a safe place, but a prosperous place, a place of inclusion, a place of respect.”

Blair faced several scandals during his tenure as police chief, many of which focused on former Toronto mayor Rob Ford as he once announced that he was “disappointed” in the mayor. These scandals made both Rob Ford and his brother, then-councillor Doug Ford, his opponents.
