The government’s senior cabinet member from B.C., Industry Minister James Moore has announced not to run for the next election scheduled in October. 39-year-old Moore announced his decision to leave politics on Friday and explained that he needed to spend more time with his wife and two-year-old son.

Mr. Moore’s website says that “recently my wife and I received some difficult news about the health of our beautiful son Spencer.” Reports claim that the Moores have recently found out that their son, Spencer, has skeletal dysplasia or dwarfism. Pointing toward his son’s health, Moore stated that “balancing family responsibilities while in public life is always a challenge. This is particularly true when you have a child with special needs,” adding that “while I have every confidence that Prime Minister Harper and our Conservative government will be re-elected, and I wish I could be part of the next Conservative government, after five terms and 15 years in public life, and with health challenges in my family, I cannot commit to another term in office.”

Mr. Moore currently receives a $247,500 salary for his public office, which will also make him eligible for an $89,589 annual pension when he turns 55. According to Moore, he plans to finish his current term in office and then return to B.C. to “pursue new opportunities” and be closer to his family. Prior to Moore, several other senior Conservatives cabinet members have announced not to run in the next election including Peter MacKay and John Baird.
