The University of British Columbia is increasing its security measures in order to ensure the safety of the student residence buildings in light of recently growing reports of a voyeur on campus. The Managing Director of UBC’s Student Housing & Hospitality Services, Andrew Parr, has revealed that “there’s been five reported incidents and they seem to be escalating.”

In his remarks, Mr. Parr stated that “the early situations were him finding ways into secure buildings and entering female bathrooms. The latest incident–the one that really escalated this into something more significant–was he did actually crawl into bed with a young woman.” The majority of complaints have been made from Place Vanier and Totem Park residences, where the suspect mostly target young girls attending summer camps. Currently, the campus security is working in liaison with the RCMP to increase patrolling and UBC has also hired a third party for extra security.

Parr claims that “right now we’re suggesting that they lock their windows.” Although, he admitted that “of course, when the weather’s hot, [it’s] not the best situation, but it does add to their safety.” So far, there has been no indication that these reports relate to a continuing series of sexual assaults taking place on the UBC campus since 2013. The latest incident took place on March 18, when a woman was attacked at Totem Park residence around 1 a.m. The 27-year-old student was found and arrested and police say this was not connected to the 2013 attacks.
