A longtime Conservative staffer, Fred DeLorey, has won the Conservative nomination battle for Central Nova seat in the fall federal election. DeLorey beat Pictou resident and retired principal, Jim Ryan, in order to secure the riding’s nomination on Saturday night in Stellarton in what the association called a “hot and closely contested vote.”

Now, DeLorey will run for the seat of retiring Justice Minister, Peter MacKay, who announced in May that he would not be seeking re-election. In his victory speech on Saturday night, DeLorey stated that “the campaign starts now.” The 36-year-old started working as the Directory of Political Operations for the federal Tories in 2013, prior to that he served in an advisory capacity for the PMO on Atlantic Canadian issues. He resigned his role in the party before announcing he was seeking the Central Nova nomination in June.

In response to the Antigonish native claims that he is not a parachute candidate, DeLorey replied that “this is where I grew up, this is home to me so I don’t buy into (that notion), I think it’s nonsense.” He has been named the “best political spinner in Ottawa” in its Terrific 25 survey. DeLorey claims that his concern is winning the election and working for the people of Central Nova. He stated that “I take the role very, very seriously as candidate here and my job is to represent (this riding) as best I can and deliver for them.”
