Birmingham Police evacuated homes in the Alum Rock area of the city on Sunday after a Birmingham man was arrested in a counter-terror swoop. According to the police, the homes were evacuated because it was looking for “suspicious items.”

West Midlands Police confirmed that a 27-year-old man is being held on suspicion of the “commission, preparation or instigation” of acts of terrorism. He was arrested at 1.40am on Sunday on suspicion of going equipped and possession of an offensive weapon. Homes were evacuated in Naseby Road when experts from West Midlands Police, the fire service and Army conducted safety checks on the items. Police has confirmed that there was “no immediate risk to the public.” A Twitter post showed Naseby Road cordoned off while emergency services and a bomb disposal unit from the Royal Logistics Corps inspected the place. West Midlands Police has confirmed that the house will remain cordoned off until later on Monday while searches are under way.

The suspect in custody is being held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act, which relates to the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Detectives from the West Midlands counter terrorism can interrogate the suspect until Tuesday morning. In a similar incident last week, Birmingham police arrested two 18-year-old men on suspicion of distributing a terrorist publication and both were later released on police bail.
