A two-alarm fire has ravaged a three-story row house building in Kensington Market on early Thursday morning. The fire ignited inside a home at 39 Kensington Avenue at around 6 a.m., which created black smoke that was visible far from the downtown core on Thursday morning.

Toronto Fire Services confirmed that its crew arrived on the scene a few minutes later and flames were already shooting out of windows on the second floor of the building. Toronto Fire Services District Chief, Kevin Shaw, assured that everyone in the home got out safely and explained that “this is a typical downtown row housing fire that appears to have burned out the stairwell going from the second to the third floor.” He added that “it migrated up through the walls, across the ceiling to the far unit. We had crews there that did a really great job, stopped it, pushed it back so the bulk of the damage is just … in the south unit.”

At its peak, 12 fire trucks and 45 firefighters were battling the blaze whereas one of the firefighters also received injuries. He was landing between the second and third floor collapsed, however Shaw said the injuries are minor. One of the residents revealed that “I started shouting at the top of my lungs for everyone to get out and luckily everybody did,” adding that “later on, my roommate opened her window and that’s of course when she jumped out.”  The man was waiting in the alley below and caught the woman as she fell.
