A widely followed fundraising game, Chase the Ace, has finally concluded after weeks of suspense and thrill on Saturday at Cape Breton town, awarding the $1.7-million jackpot to a 62-year-old retired woman and her ailing husband. The award winner, Donelda MacAskill from Englishtown, N.S., participated in the game when the jackpot was not this high but it expanded overtime and word spread about the event’s raucous, kitchen-party atmosphere.

The former tour boat company owner, MacAskill, pulled the winning card from a table in presence of more than 2,500 people gathered at the local hockey arena. At the end of the ceremony, MacAskill stated that she was going back home from one of the ticket-selling venues on the north end of town, when she realized her ticket had been called. But the road to the venue was blocked with cars so “I had to leave the car and run, and I don’t run well.”

In response to a question about what she wanted to do with the money, MacAskill replied that she does not have anything planned about spending the money. MacAskill did mention, however, that the funds will help her ailing husband, who recently underwent treatment for cancer. The couple have three grown sons. Upon inquiry about what whether she was expecting to win, the award winner replied that “you don’t play with the thought of winning,” adding that “I really didn’t think I was going to win. That’s why I was on the side of the road, ready to head for home.”
