The University of Saskatchewan’s medical school has finally gotten rid of its probationary status after having stable university leaders, more doctors teaching, and new study and lounge space for students. Preston Smith made the announcement in a statement issued from Regina on Friday, stating that the agencies that accredit Canadian and American medical schools have lifted the caveat after seeing improvements at the province’s sole medical school.

Saskatchewan Medical Student Society president, Larissa Padayachee, confessed that “I was really excited” when I heard the news. Padayachee alleged that “we’re moving in the right direction, and there’s a lot of good things happening, and there’s a lot more good things still to come.” The accreditors with the Committee on the Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools and the Liaison Committee on Medical Education warned the university that its standards were slipping in 2012. Thereafter, a warning was issued to the school to be put on probation if a list of 13 problems weren’t corrected. Despite the warning, the inspection after that put the program on probation in October 2013.

At the time of being put on probation, vice-dean of education for the college of medicine, Dr. Kent Stobart, pointed out that the problems with the school included inadequate space for studying and resting when students worked on-call shifts at hospitals, inconsistent training of residents who teach medical students, and even allegations of medical students being mistreated by health care workers. However, the accreditors’ visit to the school last May perhaps led to their decision to lift.
