Waterloo Regional Police have charged a man, 29-year-old Eric Amaral, in connection to the death of 60-year-old Michael Gibbon, who was allegedly killed with an arrow in Kitchener, Ont., earlier this month. Amaral’s first court appearance took place at a Kitchener court on Tuesday and now he will remain in police custody until his next court date, i.e. scheduled for Nov. 3.

Amaral is defending first-degree murder charges as police finds him responsible for the death of Michael Gibbon, who was found by authorities with an arrow in his chest outside a home on Margaret Avenue at about 7 a.m. on Oct. 5. Soon after the attack, Gibbon was shifted to a nearby hospital by paramedics where he died. Gibbon’s sister, Linda Leinweber, mentioned in her remarks that “you just don’t think of those things happening here, but least of all you can’t imagine that kind of death for your brother.”

In addition to the murder charges, Amaral is also facing 17 other unrelated charges including several weapons-related offences. Record shows that Amaral allegedly shot a Waterloo police officer in the face and hand with a pellet gun during a traffic stop last week. In the beginning of the investigation, Amaral was considered a person of interest in Gibbon’s death but now he is the only suspect. Staff Sgt. Mike Haffner stressed that “we’re not anticipating any further arrests related to the Michael Gibbon homicide.” The weapon charges against Amaral includes a crossbow but police has refrained from establishing if it was the same crossbow used to attack Gibbon.
