Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne has warned that elementary school teachers, custodians and other education support workers that are partaking in the ongoing protest could have their pay docked if they failed to reach contract settlements by Nov. 1. The Premier referred to the riot act to the education unions that have so far failed to reach an agreements with schools boards.

In her remarks, Wynne, who stood beside Education Minister Liz Sandals, stated that “children’s lives are being negatively affected. This has got to stop.” The premier gave eight days to the unions to negotiate an agreement and stop their continuing work-to-rule protests. She mentioned that if the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario (ETFO), Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario and the Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation (OSSTF) failed to reach an agreement, the government would grant a request from the school boards “to respond to the ongoing strike action.” Thereafter, boards will issue a five-day warning to the unionized employees of being penalized for not doing their jobs. Wynne stated that “after that notice period of five days, management could respond to the withdrawal of services with a commensurate reduction in pay or other changes in the terms of employment.”

Moreover, the premier also defended her controversial payment of $2.5 million to three education unions to defray bargaining costs. Wynne’s decision has come after she summoned ETFO president Sam Hammond, CUPE Ontario president Fred Hahn and OSSTF president Paul Elliott to her Queen’s Park office.
