The report published by former Toronto mayor, Barbara Hall, in culmination of an advisory panel investigation into the issues faced by school board has recommended that the scandal-plagued Toronto District School Board should be given a year to correct course or else be split into two or more smaller boards.
According to the report released in full on Friday night, a supervisor should be placed in charge of the board and in case the board still fails to complete a list of key goals within a year, it should be broken up. The list of 20 recommendations made in the report say that “(the ministry should) determine a timeline for creating the new school boards that take into consideration the timing of the 2018 municipal and school board elections.”
However, in reaction to the report, School board chair, Robin Pilkey, has called it a move to dismantle the board a “step backward.” In her remarks, Robin elucidated that “while there is always room for improvement, there have been many positive changes at the TDSB with more to come,” adding that “with regards to the suggestion that we break the board up — that would be a costly step backward with little benefit to students.” In addition to that, Pilkey also rejected the suggestion for the board to have a supervisor, countering that recommendation is “stuck in the past.” The report was published after months of investigation into the problems at the board with a view to creating a new model to govern the TDSB.
