premier wall insistent to refuse a national carbon tax agreementDespite the statement issued on Friday by federal Environment minister, Catherine McKenna,Saskatchewan Premier Brad Wall has once again expressed his disapproval of a national carbon tax once again. He mentioned on his Facebook wall on Saturday interview that “in case you’re wondering, I won’t be signing any agreement that includes a national carbon tax.”

Minister McKenna revealed on Friday that a carbon price is just one climate measure among many, while calling it “really important.” She explained that “it’s interesting that large businesses are calling for a price on carbon because they see that as the most efficient way to reduce emissions, to foster innovation and also to provide certainty,” adding that “most big energy companies have an internal price on carbon (already), because they know this is going to happen.” McKenna pointed out that working groups coming out of next week’s first ministers meeting will “tackle some pretty tough issues,” listing them to include carbon pricing, climate change mitigation, specific carbon reduction measures, adaptation, and clean technology development. She also confessed that transportation is a big source of Canadian emissions too, which needs to be addressed as electric vehicles are a “direction we want to be going.”

However, Mr. Wall remains insistent that a potential $15-per-tonne minimum carbon price be would “kneecap” the economy and would not be part of his province’s climate policy mix, re-iterates it’s not the time for a new national tax, including carbon.
