mulcair ousted from leadership ousted at ndp conventionThe New Democratic Party has voted out its leader, Thomas Mulcair, with 52 per cent of delegates choosing to have a new leadership at the NDP’s Edmonton convention after its crushing electoral defeat in October 2015. Soon after the vote, Mr Mulcair was thanked for his role as the leader of the party but now the part will hold a leadership convention in 2017 to select its new leader.

In an address to the delegates before the crucial vote, Mulcair urged the party members to “stand with him” in a last-minute appeal to keep his job. Mulcair’s speech focused on almost the same issues that have been discussed for months, including reducing income inequality, raising corporate taxes and closing tax loopholes, pushing for universal pharmacare and a national childcare system. He explained that “(Canadians) are counting on us to fight for them and stand up to well-connected and powerful interests. We can’t let them down. We can’t get distracted. We have to push forward,” adding that “if you keep standing with me, then together, we will never stop fighting.”

Things were not looking good for Mulcair since delegates began to arrive last week at the Edmonton convention. A debate on the Leap Manifesto, a far-left call to action backed by outside activists and artists, occupied a considerable portion of the convention and the manifesto, which advocates for a transition from fossil fuels and a moratorium on new pipeline infrastructure, pitted the federal left wing against Alberta Premier Rachel Notley’s administration.
