Alberta’s senior wildfire manager, Chad Morrison, has revealed that the raging wildfire that laid waste to an area larger than Prince Edward Island and wrecked one-tenth of Fort McMurray was most likely caused by human actions. Even though the investigation is still underway, Chad explained on Saturday that the fire was probably the result of human actions, highlighting that it is still a very broad category that includes everything from careless ATV drivers to issues with power lines.
Discussing the cause behind the inferno, known informally as ‘The Beast,’ Mr. Morrison stated that “human-caused really means anything other than lightning. It’s most likely human caused, but we’re continuing to investigate,” adding that it’s a conclusion local firefighters agree with. The owner of a local helicopter company that has helped fight many forest fires in northern Alberta, Paul Spring, alleged that despite the fact that the Fort McMurray fire was caused by actions, it might not have been intentionally set. He elucidated that “it wasn’t natural” for the fire to ignite on May 1 because “there was no probability of a fire starting naturally that day. There was no lightning in the forecast, nothing that we look for.”
Officially known as MWF-009, the wildfire was first spotted 15-kilometres southwest of Fort McMurray by an airborne forestry crew on May 1. It was discovered during the late afternoon, the peak burning period of the day. There were power lines in the area according to Mr. Spring.
