lytton evacuation orders lifted as 50% wildfire containedThe residents of Lytton area who were evacuated from their homes in order to contain the damage of an aggressive wildfire are now going to be allowed to return home. According to Fire Information Officer Max Birkner, the decision was made in light of the progress made by the firefighters in putting the fire down. He explained that “so the fire is now 50% contained, it is at 532 hectares, which is 32 larger than we had said before, but that’s mostly due just to better aerial mapping that’s been conducted here on site.”

In his remarks, Birkner alleged that the crews were helped by favourable conditions on the ground as he explained that “you know I’m on the site right now, and it’s raining up here which is excellent, that’s definitely helping the firefighters a lot, and the winds are not super strong right now, so they’re definitely lighter than they have been and that’s been helping us quite a lot.” Birkner mentioned that a total of 91 firefighters, five helicopters, five pieces of heavy equipment are currently battling the fire on site.

Two evacuation orders imposed by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District and Lytton First Nation have been announced to be lifted at 3pm today. Meanwhile, more than 40 homes in the two jurisdictions are still placed in an evacuation alert, which means they might be told to evacuate abruptly at any time. The alert covers the entire area between the CN train bridge in Lytton north to the Stein River.
