A flight from Calgary to Ottawa, WestJet flight 610, made an emergency landing in Regina immediately after the crew member’s reported smoke in the flight deck at around 11:15 a.m. on Saturday. One of the passengers on the flight, Mark Ramsay explained that “I thought we might be avoiding some weather,” adding that “we started descending, which is pretty unusual for this flight. The seatbelt light came on and the flight crew started the landing procedure.”
Later police confirmed that the smoke was caused due to a mechanical issue but it was quickly handled by the airport’s fire department after removing all passengers safely and unharmed. The first responders to the emergency included the Regina Police Service, Regina EMS and the Regina Fire Department, all of whom also cleared the airport soon after the incident. The Regina Airport Authority stated that it’s pleased with how first responders handled the call. President and CEO of the Regina Airport Authority, Dick Graham, mentioned that “whenever an emergency occurs, we very quickly begin our emergency procedures and that response was enacted very well for the first responders across the city and our own staff responded very quickly.”
The passengers were offered food and refreshments during their stay in the flight lounge, before they continued on their trips. Graham stated that “we really put the passengers first and foremost in our minds, as do the airlines.” According to a statement from WestJet, all passengers were transferred to alternate flights so that they can reach their destinations and the plane has been taken offline until its inspection by WestJet’s maintenance team.
