southeast saskatchewan suffers minor earthquake, no damage reportedAuthorities have confirmed that an earthquake of 3.8 magnitude hit southeastern Saskatchewan near the Manitoba border last night. Since the earthquake only lasted less than a second, experts claim that residents might not have gotten up in case they were sleeping.

Earthquake seismologist at the Geological Survey of Canada, Honn Kao, explained that the quake was felt early Monday morning and revealed that “the epicentre is located 32 kilometres southeast of Yorkton.” Kao mentioned that “it was determined to have a magnitude of 3.8 and the depth at which it was located appears to be shallow. We believe it to be around 10 kilometres (in depth) or maybe even shallower.” So far until noon on Monday, Kao confirmed to have received over eight reports from those who experienced the phenomena. He alleged that “none of these reports indicate significant damage or injury, but it was definitely felt by the local community.”

Even though the frequency is relatively low, Kao confirms that earthquakes are often felt in the area. He alleged that “this particular area has had some seismic activity in the past, but all of these events were small,” adding that “they were all around the same magnitude range as this (Monday) morning’s event, so it was not a total surprise to us that we actually see an earthquake appear in that place.” He pointed out that an earthquake occurs along geological fault lines and is the release of underground pressure. He stated that “historically, all the earthquakes that have occurred in this area have been small and when we say small, we mean less than 4.”
