ndp takes up public health care as top issue for fallThe federal New Democrats are gearing up to give a tough time to the majority Liberal government by taking up the preservation of public health care as their primary cause when the Parliament resumes this fall. The party is hopeful that its cause will help gain support of the Canadians at a time when a British Columbia doctor is challenging some of the restrictions of the public system, whereas the Liberals are looking to write a new health accord with the provinces.

The NDP health critic, Don Davies, mentioned during a telephonic interview on Wednesday that “I think Canadians may not be aware of the serious threats that confront medicare.” Davies stated that “we’ve got to strongly be on the Liberal government’s case to make sure that they actually increase funding, and make sure that the federal government is increasing resources to the provinces.” After being reduced to third-party status in the 2015 election, New Democrats were able to occupy the offices of the official opposition but they will now have to work hard to stay relevant in Parliament.

In a significant vote earlier this year, NDP members dethroned Tom Mulcair as their leader so he will only stay on until his replacement is chosen the fall of 2017. Mr. Mulcair has often been appreciated in the parliament for being a strong voice and his “prosecutorial” style. However, he needs to take up a genuine issue that will capture the interests of voters to make a mark before surrendering his leadership position.
