Cheyanne Roger (Etobicoke, Ont.) scored a game-high 16 points to go along with nine rebounds as the Canadian Cadette Women’s National Team (CWNT) opened the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women with a 112-17 victory over Guatemala on Monday.

Roger was one of seven Canadian players to reach double-digit scoring figures in a game that saw every player on the team make at least one field goal. The second highest scorer was Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) who poured in 15 points and, more notably, managed to come up with five steals.

As a team, the CWNT recorded 31 steals, significantly contributing to the 47 turnovers that it forced, limiting Guatemala (0-1) to just 39 field-goal attempts in comparison to the 115 shots that Canada managed to put up.

Guatemala’s leading scorers were Monica Melissa Ramirez Escalante and Melissa Marie Vargas Johnson who both had five.

With the win, Canada (1-0) shares a tie of the lead in Group A with Puerto Rico (1-0), a team that beat Mexico (0-1) on Monday 67-54.
