POSTGAME QUOTES:

HEAD COACH MIKE BABCOCK

On Hyman’s play tonight:

I thought he really worked, really competed hard. Obviously we took too many penalties again so guys like him get to play lots. We’ve got to stop taking so many penalties just because it really hurts the rhythm of our bench and gets other guys out of the game. I thought he was really strong.

On what has made the penalty kill successful:

DJ [Smith] has done a good job with the scheme and then we’ve got good players that compete hard and we get goaltending on specialty teams. I think it’s a combination of all of those things. You can’t do it without good players, obviously.

On if he thought Komarov’s hit would warrant discipline:

That’s not up to me, that’s up to the league.

On what has sparked Kadri’s scoring this season:

He’s in a way better spot on the power play for him with the way he shoots the puck. It’s way better to be in the middle than on the flank even though he scored one with a good cross in front tonight… That really helps him for sure. It’s like anything, it’s contagious. When you start scoring you think you can and take a little bit more time when you get it instead of rushing and you bury it.

On Marincin’s status:

He’ll be good.

On if Rielly will be available for the road trip:

I don’t know that for sure. The great thing about injuries is if you win, you don’t have to rush guys.

FREDERIK ANDERSEN (26 SAVES, SHUTOUT)

On tonight’s effort:

It was good. We came right back and played a good game again. This time we scored on some good opportunities and got goals at the right times. We played well defensively.

On the penalty kill’s success:

We wanted to get down the ice and pressure them and I think we did a really good job. On some of them we gave them too much but good goal by [Hyman]. It was good.

On the defensive effort without Rielly:

We just keep battling and it’s a team effort. No matter who is in the lineup we want to play well and play hard.

ZACH HYMAN (SHORTHANDED GOAL, 16:46 TOI)

On what has made the penalty kill effective:

I think you just try to play the structure and then when there’s offence, you don’t force the offence, but when it’s there you go and take it. I’ve gotten a couple of good bounces in the past couple of games and a couple of shorties. It’s good.

On how the penalty kill generates offence:

We’re just an aggressive penalty kill so we like to go at the other team hard and cause turnovers unless you’re clearing the puck. Sometimes when you do that you get odd man rushes and breakaways and things like that – the stuff that you can capitalize on.

On if he surprises defenders with his speed:

Yeah, I think sometimes. I don’t think I’m the most flashy skater but I think that I get the job done. It works.

NAZEM KADRI (2 GOALS, 6 SHOT ATTEMPTS)

On the team’s execution tonight:

Now we’re starting to get more familiar with playing with leads and understanding how to play with them. Again, we had to generate some energy in the building and no better way than to score a couple of goals first.

On hitting 100 NHL goals and 20 goals on the season tonight:

It’s exciting. It’s exciting to be able to share them with my teammates. Obviously I’ve put in a lot of hard work but, at the end of the day, the only reason I care about that is because it helps our team win. It doesn’t really matter how it goes in or who scores as long as it’s in the back of the net.

On the biggest difference for him offensively from last year to this year:

Just trying to find the right areas, trying to get open. Obviously our power play has been huge for us. Just trying to find spots 10-20 inches away from the net and trying to put them in.

LEO KOMAROV (27 SHIFTS, 16:21 TOI)

On earning a win on his birthday:

It’s always nice to win and, especially today, it’s only once we get 30 and I had a great day and a good game.

On his second period hit on Gaudreau:

It was a penalty kill, he was close to the boards and I had a lot of speed. It kind of looked a little worse than it was. He’s a little bit of a small guy too. I think it was a good hit.

On Kadri scoring his 20th goal:

He has a lot of confidence with the puck and he shoots lot trying to drive to the net. It’s going in for him so we’re happy.

On if he feels old around the younger players:

Sometimes, yeah. The jokes they’ve got around here, it’s not for me. But I still like the guys, unbelievable, it’s nice to be around them.

MITCH MARNER (1 GOAL, 1 ASSIST)

On tonight’s performance:

We came in and we played the way we wanted to. Obviously we got our power play back on track, which is nice. We really got a lot of scoring chances off of it, which I think built a lot of confidence for us going into Detroit.

On if he was surprised by Zaitsev’s shot attempt that led to his goal:

A little bit of both — it kind of caught me by surprise but at the same time I know he’s going to get it to the net. I think it hit my one skate and bounced up and over his shoulder. It was kind of lucky but, at the same time, it was nice by Nikita.
