Winnipeg Jets Coaching Staff Agree to Contract Extensions

The Winnipeg Jets are pleased to announce today Assistant Coaches Charlie Huddy, Pascal Vincent, Wade Flaherty and Tony Borgford have all agreed to contract extensions. As well, St. John’s IceCaps Assistant Coach Mark Morrison has also agreed to a contract extension. 

Huddy, 53, has been an Assistant Coach in the NHL for the past 13 seasons with the New York Rangers, Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets. After an 18-year NHL career as a defenseman, Huddy used his skill and experience to lead the Jets defense core last season. The Oshawa, ON native’s longest coaching tenure was with the Edmonton Oilers as an Assistant Coach from 2000-2009, during which time he helped the Oilers reach the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006. Huddy had an 18-year playing career as a professional where he won the Stanley Cup five times (’84, ’85, ’87, ’88, ’90), each one with the Edmonton Oilers,  and played in 1017 NHL games for the Oilers, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres, and St. Louis Blues. 

Vincent, 40, just completed his first NHL coaching assignment as an Assistant Coach with the Jets during the 2011-12 season. Vincent was responsible for the Jets forwards and executed the team’s powerplay. Prior to his time with the Jets, Vincent was a Head Coach in the QMJHL for the past 12 seasons with the Montreal Juniors and Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Vincent coached the Montreal Juniors to the second best record in the QMJHL at 46-12-10. 

Flaherty, 44, joined the Jets for their inaugural season as the Goaltending Coach, working closely with Ondrej Pavelec and Chris Mason. The Terrace, BC native has a close connection to Winnipeg after three seasons with the Manitoba Moose. Flaherty played one season under Winnipeg Jets Head Coach Claude Noel in 2003-04 when Noel and Flaherty won the Calder Cup with the Milwaukee Admirals and Flaherty earned playoff MVP honours. 

Borgford, 38, came to the Jets last season after working with the Atlanta Thrashers since the team’s inception in 1999. As the Video Coach, Borgford is responsible for video analysis of all pre-scout and game film, breaking down opponents’ systems and tendencies. The native of Regina, SK also played college hockey at Mercyhurst College in 1998-99 prior to joining the Thrashers. 

Morrison, 49, joined newly appointed Head Coach Keith McCambridge behind the bench in St. John’s, NL for their first season as the IceCaps. The IceCaps finished first in the Atlantic Division with 94 points until they were eventually eliminated from the playoffs in the third round against the Norfolk Admirals. Morrison began his coaching career in 2005-06 as an Assistant Coach of the Salmon Kings but took over as the Head Coach after 27 games. Morrison then led the Salmon Kings to a record of 173-133-27 and four playoff series wins.
