On the first day of Yonex Open Japan 2012 on Wednesday, September 19th, some young players, favorites to be in the next top 10 players, advanced to the second round.

An 18-year-old Danish Viktor Axelsen (VTZF) played the opener against Suppanyu Ayihingsanon (VT80) of Thailand. This is the third time for Viktor to face the opponent and he had won the past two matches. Today, Viktor won the first game by 21-13, but the opponent took the second by 21-19. After Viktor led 16-12, the Thai fought back to lead 18-17. In the tense atmosphere, Viktor attacked aggressively to finish the match by 21-13, 19-21, 21-19. The young Danish star will face Lee Chong Wei, who ousted India’s Anand Pawar in two fast games 21-13, 21-9.

Hong Kong’s Hu Yun once again spoiled great Dane, Peter Gade’s day – almost a year after the Dane was sent packing from what he thought at the time to be his last French Open.  And today, in the Yoyogi stadium, in the Chinese-less Yonex Japan Open, the Dane was once again beaten by Hu,11-21, 20-22 due to his broken left wrist a month ago.

Nor did Denmark’s other men’s singles players have much more luck.  Hans Kristian Vittinghus and Jan O Jorgensen went down to Japan’s young guard. HK lost to 18-year-old Akira Koga, while Jorgensen was beaten by the 2012 Russian Open Grand Prix winner Kazumasa Sakai 24-22, 21-16.

Home favourite and 5th seed Kenichi Tago lost to Malaysia’s Chong Wei Feng in three games. Tago kept his concentration from start till the end of 1st game and won it easily 21-8 but in the 2nd and 3rd game, the Malaysian gave the world #9 tough time and wrapped it up in three by scores of 8-21, 21-16, 21-17 in a match that ran to 56 minutes.

In the women’s singles, a 17-year-old and No. 3 seed Ratchanok Inthanon(ARC10) of Thailand also won the first round against Japan’s Sayaka Takahashi by 21-12, 19-21, 21-19.
