AFC U-16 Championship 2011Adriana Jones’ double helped Australia earn their first points at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship 2011 with a 4-0 win over Thailand at the Olympic Sport Center Stadium.

Victoria Linton’s side fully deserved their victory after dominating the game but were also helped by Thai errors at the back and in the middle of the park.

Jones opened the scoring when she blasted home unchallenged in the 21st minute and added another to her tally from Amy Harrison’s nod down in the dying minutes of the second-half.

Striker Lauren Brown also found the back of the net in the second period with a superb strike from 18 yards and midfielder Breanna Sampson got her name on the scoresheet in the 64th minute.

Both teams were desperate for a win to salvage some pride after losing their first three matches in the tournament.

But Thailand never looked like winning as the Australians made a lively start, with captain Alisha Bass shooting over the bar immediately after the first whistle.

Alexandra Natoli then headed too high after Thai goalkeeper Kittiya Aryuwong’s poor handling provided her a clear opportunity.

Thailand 0-4 Australia (www.the-afc.com)It came as no surprise when Jones gave Australia the lead after 21 minutes. She was allowed plenty of space on the right to blast home a pass that followed a superb display of link-up play in midfield.

Thailand wasted their best chance when Oraya Sridarak was left unmarked in the 35th minute but dragged her shot wide, and she then had a free-kick saved by Australian goalkeeper Shamiran Khamis soon after.

Linton’s team started proceedings after the break in the same spirit and launched successive attacks on the Thai goal.

Brown showed exceptional technique for her goal as she collected a well-timed pass from the right wing and beat two Thai defenders before hammering the ball in from 18 yards.

While Brown’s goal had a touch of individual brilliance, Sampson’s strike demonstrated Australia’s composure in front of goal.

The midfielder found herself in the middle of a scramble in the Thai box but managed to poke home.

Jones then grabbed the fourth with a clever finish after cutting inside the Thai defence to hand her side their first win of the tournament.
