CONCACAFU.S. wins in Vancouver; Canada also qualifies

The United States defeated Canada 4-0 on Sunday in the final of the CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Vancouver in front of a tournament record attendance of over 25,000. Both finalists qualified to the 2012 Olympic Games.

In its five games, the U.S. women outscored its opponents by a combined score of 38-0. Canada had booked its ticket to the 2012 London Olympics by defeating Mexico 3-1 on Friday.

The United States qualified with a 3-0 win over Costa Rica earlier that same night.

Morelia and Monterrey tie; Metapan goes top

CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinalists Morelia and Monterrey tied 0-0 on Saturday night in Morelia’s Estadio Morelos. It was Monterrey second draw against a fellow CCL team after tying Pumas 1-1 last week.

On Sunday, Pumas played visiting Chivas to a scoreless draw, while Santos closed out the round with a 3-1 victory over Tijuana.

In other CCL team news:

Toronto FC made two significant player moves this past week. It first signed veteran Ecuadorian defender Geovanny Caicedo, who most recently played for LDU Quito.

The club also signed Richard Eckersley on a permanent deal. The former Manchester United defender had been on loan last season from English club Burnley.

In El Salvador, Isidro Metapan grabbed the league lead with a 1-0 win over Once Municipal. Alfredo Pacheco scored the lone goal in a rematch between last season’s finalists.

Bart continues as president of Haitian federation

Yves Jean Bart was elected on Sunday to his fourth four-year term as president of the Haitian Football Federation.

Bart was reelected unanimously with a total of 20 votes.

Mexico and U.S. gain friendly victories

The U.S. secured its second 1-0 win in five days on Wednesday, beating Panama 1-0 at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City.

Graham Zusi scored the game’s lone goal in the 12th minute.

On Saturday, the U.S. defeated Venezuela 1-0 at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, on a 97th minute goal by Ricardo Clark.

Goals by Rafael Marquez Lugo and Oribe Peralta broke a 1-1 stalemate and lifted Mexico to a 3-1 win Venezuela on Wednesday in Houston.

 

U-20 Championship schedule announced

The schedule for the CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship, which will be played entirely at the Estadio Rommel Fernandez in Panama City, Panama, was announced last Wednesday.

The competition launches on March 1 with a Group A doubleheader, when Canada faces Haiti and Mexico opposes Jamaica. On the following day, defending champion United States is pitted against Guatemala in the Group B opener, while host Panama will close the doubleheader with an encounter against Cuba.

The groups will alternate play through March 6, highlighted by a meeting between the United States and Panama in the last game of the group phase.

The semifinals are set for March 9 with the third-place match and final to follow two days later. The top three teams qualify for the 2012 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup.

The World Cup was originally to be played in Uzbekistan, August 18 – September 9, but FIFA announced last month that the Asian nation would no longer host the tournament due to logistical and technical reasons. Japan has been proposed as the new host.

Individual Tickets for Nashville and Carson group matches on sale

Individual game tickets for group matches of the 2012 CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying went on sale last Wednesday. Group A consists of the U.S., Canada, Cuba and El Salvador, and all its matches will be played as doubleheaders at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee, on March 22, 24 and 26.

Mexico, Honduras, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago comprise Group B, which have its matches played at The Home Depot Center in Carson, California, as doubleheader events on March 23, 25 and 27. The top two finishers from each group will advance to the elimination round in Kansas City, Kansas.

The semifinal matches that determine CONCACAF’s two entrants to the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be played on March 31 at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park in Kansas City, The championship game will take place two days later.
