CONCACAFCONCACAF congress to elect new president 

CONCACAF will hold a congress on May 23 in conjunction with the FIFA Congress in Budapest, Hungary.

National association delegates will gather a day prior to the start of the FIFA Congress and elect a new president to complete the term of Jack Warner.

Warner, whose term was to run into 2015, resigned June 20, 2011. CONCACAF member associations may nominate candidates for the office up to 60 days before the CONCACAF congress.

 
U-20 women’s teams announce rosters and prepare for Panama 

The CONCACAF Under-20 Women’s Championship starts Thursday in Panama City, Panama, and the eight participants are finalizing their rosters and completing preparations.

Defending champion United States announced its roster last week. Coach Steve Swanson will rely on 2010 U-20 World Cup veterans Crystal Dunn, Maya Hayes, Sam Mewis and Mollie Pathman.

Mexico coach Roberto Medina will call on five senior national team members, each of whom played at last month’s CONCACAF Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament in Vancouver, Canada. Goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago and midfielder Nayeli Rangel are the players to watch.

Guatemala head coach Benjamin Monterroso has called upon six players who played in last month’s Olympic Qualifying tournament. Maria Monterroso, the coach’s daughter, will look to expand on her performance in Vancouver, where she scored two goals. Additionally, Monterroso netted four goals in U-20 Central American qualifying.

Jamaica will travel to Panama with a roster that includes six players from universities in the Unites States. Kimberly Spence (Auburn University) and Chinyelu Asher (Purdue University) are expected to be key performers, while Canadian high school student Taylor Grant is also making the trip.

 

Morelia remains undefeated; Monterrey is third in Mexico and the Galaxy win in Arizona 

Morelia continued its hot form with a 2-0 victory over Cruz Azul on Sunday. The team coached by Tomas Boy won its fifth-consecutive game thanks to goals from Joao Rojas and Miguel Sabah. Morelia currently sits atop the Mexican Clausura standings with 17 points after eight games.

On Saturday, host Monterrey defeated Puebla 2-1 in order to move into third place. Humberto Suazo scored his first goal of the season after five minutes and Aldo de Nigris grabbed the winner early in the second half.

Pumas, who tied the New York Red Bulls 0-0 in a friendly in Phoenix, Arizona, on Wednesday, are now winless in six games after tying Queretaro 1-1 on Sunday. The Mexico City-based team sits in 14th place.

Santos lost to last-place Chivas on Sunday 2-1 in Guadalajara. American forward Herculez Gómez missed a potential game tying penalty in the final seconds. Santos has lost two of its last three games and is now in sixth place with 14 points.

The LA Galaxy won its first game at the Desert Diamond Cup in Tucson, Arizona, topping Real Salt Lake 2-0 on Sunday. Paolo Cardozo and Mike Magee scored during the last ten minutes to give Los Angeles the win.  

Toronto FC is in Florida for the Walt Disney World Pro Soccer Classic and opened with a 2-2 draw against Orlando City. Miguel Aceval and Torsten Frings scored for the Canadian side.

The Seattle Sounders wrapped up its trip to Mexico with a 5-2 win over Atlante in Cancun. Fredy Montero, who has four career Champions League goals, scored twice for the visitors.

Seattle returns to home to face Mexico’s Jaguares on Wednesday at Century Link Field.

Isidro Metapan remained unbeaten in El Salvador with a 1-0 away win over Aguila. Mark Lester Blanco scored for Metapan, who now leads second-place Luis Angel Firpo by four points.

 

Under-23 teams gain victories in preparation matches 

El Salvador beat Puerto Rico’s full national team 4-1 last Wednesday at the Estadio Cuscatlan in San Salvador. Isidro Gutierrez and Irving Valdez scored for the hosts.

After losses to Atletico Nacional and Independiente Medellin, Panama closed out a week-long trip to Colombia with a 3-2 win over Envigado on the strength of goals from Manuel Asprilla, Yairo Yau and José Gómez.

The. U.S. defeated expansion NASL side the San Antonio Scorpions 3-0 on Friday on goals by Brek Shea, Dilly Duka and Jack McInerney.

The U.S. also defeated FC Dallas 2-1 last Wednesday as part of its week-long camp in Frisco, Texas. Shea scored the winning goal against his club, but was also sent off.

The same day, Mexico beat second-division side Neza FC 4-2 on goals from Javier Cortes, Jair Barraza, Othoniel Arce and U-20 invitee Candido Ramirez.

Coach Luis Fernando Tena named a new 20-player roster that includes members of Cruz Azul and Chivas, who had been omitted  last week due to Copa Libertadores matches. The U.S. and Mexico will meet in Texas on Wednesday at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco.

Lastly, Trinidad & Tobago will travel to face Antigua & Barbuda’s senior team on Wednesday in a friendly.

 

Nicaragua and Jamaica win pair of friendlies 

Nicaragua swept visiting Puerto Rico in a two-game series in Managua.

The home side triumphed 1-0 in the Friday opener on a Ricardo Vega goal. Two days later, Alex Villanueva scored twice in a 4-1 winning effort.

On Wednesday, visiting Guatemala fell 2-1 to Paraguay in Luque. Carlos Ruiz scored the lone goal for the Guatemalans.

On Friday, Jamaica beat Cuba 3-0 in Montego Bay to earn a second-straight win over its Caribbean counterparts in less than a week. Ryan Johnson, JeVaughn Watson and Mitchily Waul scored for the Reggae Boyz. Two days earlier, Jorginho James netted the game’s only goal in a series-opening win for the Jamaicans.

Also on Wednesday, Guyana defeated home-side Grenada 2-1 on a last-minute penalty by Walter Moore.

Lastly, a number of CONCACAF teams will be busy on Wednesday’s FIFA Date as Costa Rica travels to Wales, the U.S faces Italy in Genoa, Mexico meets Colombia in Miami, Panama visits Paraguay, El Salvador clashes with Estonia in Los Angeles, Guatemala travels to Guyana, Canada plays Armenia in Cyprus, New Zealand welcomes Jamaica, Honduras hosts Ecuador and Cuba heads to South America to face Bolivia.

Canada travels to Cyprus; U.S. goes to Portugal 

The women’s teams from Canada and the United States will defend their titles this week at the Cyprus Cup and the Algarve Cup in Portugal, respectively.

Canada will open against Scotland on Tuesday, and then face Italy on Thursday and the Netherlands on Sunday to complete the first round. Canada also won the tournament in 2008.

The U.S. will begin Wednesday against Denmark before meeting Norway on Friday and a World Cup final rematch against Japan next Monday. The United States has captured eight Algarve titles since the tournament began in 1994 and will be looking to win its third straight.
