Heartbreak for FC Edmonton in Home Opener

FC Edmonton's captain Paul Hamilton takes on the Minnesota Stars  defense during NASL action at Clarke Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The weather could not have been better for FC Edmonton (FCE) as they took to Clarke Stadium for the first time this season in the home opening game against the Minnesota Stars FC. The Eddies had Yashir Pinto available to play up front for the first time this season. 

The game started off bright for FCE as Pinto and Shaun Saiko connected in the attacking third. Saiko then found the back of the net to mark the first goal for the Eddies season inside 10 minutes. 

The victory was short lived when FCE player Kevin Hatchi made a rough challenge in the box which earned him a red card and a penalty kick for the Minnesota Stars. Neil Hlavaty took the penalty which found its way past Eddies’ keeper Michal Misiewicz for the game to be tied. 

At 1-1, and with the Eddies down to 10 men, the Minnesota Stars were eager to take advantage. The Stars found their second goal of the match in the 17 th minute when Misiewicz could not hold on to a shot from a free kick and Stars captain Kyle Altman doubled the visiting teams lead. 

30 minutes into the match a free kick from Paul Hamilton found the Pinto up front and he was fouled on a goal scoring chance. Stars player Altman was also give a red for the challenge. 

The teams were even at 10 men a piece heading into half time. 

FC Edmonton came back on to the field for the second half and clearly had gotten the right kind of pep-talk in the dressing room. They were not the on the field for 10 minutes before Hamilton headed in the goal to tie the game from Saiko’s free kick. 

The Eddies continued to be the dominate team and in the 63rd minute, Pinto found Kyle Porter at close range and he blasted the ball to the inside top of the net. 

At 3-2, all the Eddies had to do was defend, but Minnesota was not going to back down. 4 minutes later, Stars midfielder Kentaro Takada slid one past Misiewicz for the game to be tied at 3. 

It looked like FCE was going to settle for a tie, but a the last play of the game, a long throw-in, saw the Stars substitute Devin Del Do find the back of the net for the winning goal. 

The full time whistle blew shortly after and the Eddies fell 4-3 in a heart breaking loss the Minnesota Stars in their season home opener.
