USA-BRAZIL REWIND

The USA’s five-game winning streak dating back to last year came to a halt as it fell to five-time FIFA World Cup champion Brazil 4-1 on Wednesday, May 30, in front of 67,619 spectators at FedExField in Landover, Md.

U.S. forward Herculez Gomez headed home his third career goal and first of the year in the 45th minute off a cross from Fabian Johnson. At the time, it cut Brazil’s lead to 2-1 going into the half. The assist was Johnson’s first of his international career.

U.S. forward Clint Dempsey returned to the pitch after missing the USA’s 5-1 win against Scotland on May 26 as he continued his recovery from a groin injury. Dempsey was a 56th-minute sub for Jose Torres, and he came close to notching a goal in the 63rd minute when he lunged at the ball in the six-yard box, but Brazil’s Romula cleared it out of danger.

ROSTER NOTES

Jermaine Jones leads the U.S. this year in minutes played (270) and assists (3). He scored his second international goal in the match against Scotland in a 5-1 victory on May 26, heading home the USA’s fifth on the night. Jones helped Schalke 04 to a third-place finish in the German Bundesliga and a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

Michael Bradley played in a career-high 34 league games in his first season at Chievo Verona in Italy’s Serie A. Chievo finished in 10th place in the league table – the team’s best finish since it rejoined the top flight in 2008-09.
Despite his time away from MLS play, U.S. forward Chris Wondolowski is still tied for the league’s goalscoring lead with the New York Red Bulls’ Kenny Cooper with 11 goals each.

USA VS. CANADA SERIES

The USA is 13-8-9 overall against Canada, with only one match played on a neutral site – a 3-0 U.S. loss on Dec. 22, 1976, in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The last time the U.S. played in Canada, the USA was only one victory away from a spot in the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Claudio Reyna tallied the game-winning goal off an assist by Roy Wegerle just five minutes into the match. Then Wegerle registered two goals of his own as the USA clinched a berth in France with a well-orchestrated 3-0 victory in World Cup qualifying on Nov. 9, 1997, in Vancouver.

The USA has done exceptionally well against Canada for the past two decades. The U.S. is in the midst of a 14-game unbeaten streak (8-0-6) since the USA dropped a 2-0 decision to Canada on April 2, 1985, in Vancouver.
