France’s Ligue de football professionnel (LFP) has announced plans to launch its own pay-television channel showing live matches.

Last Friday the LFP awarded one Monday night game per matchweek to Eurosport France, from next season, choosing to retain the rights to nine games to be exploited on the new platform. A launch date has yet to be determined.
The new channel is a defensive move by the league to protect television revenues by putting pressure on pay-operators Canal Plus and France Telecom-owned Orange.

Orange boss Stéphane Richard recently said that he wants to reduce the cost of sports rights. Orange currently pays 203 million euros per season for Ligue 1 rights in deals that expire at the end of the 2011-12 season.
