Milos RaonicDubois and Wozniak fall in ladies action in Melbourne

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) reached the third round of the Australian Open for the second consecutive year on Thursday in Melbourne. The 21-year-old Canadian, seeded no. 23 in the tournament, defeated Germany’s Philipp Petzschner 6-4, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5 to move on at the first Grand Slam of the 2012 season.

Raonic battled his way to a four set victory in just under three hours against a tough opponent despite losing his serve twice in the match, the first two times he has been broken this year. Raonic awaits the winner of the match between Aussie favourite Lleyton Hewitt and no. 15 seed Andy Roddick in what would be a rematch of the 2011 Memphis final.

On the ladies side, Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC) held a lead in the opening set against no. 30 seed Angelique Kerber of Germany before ultimately falling 7-5, 6-1. Dubois called the trainer in the second set to treat her foot, but she was able to finish the match. Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) came up short despite a valiant effort against no. 27 seed Maria Kirilenko of Russia 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.

Meanwhile, in doubles, Daniel Nestor (Toronto, ON) and Max Mirnyi of Belarus began their Australian Open campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 win over the Australian team of Benjamin Mitchell and Matt Reid. Rebecca Marino (Vancouver, BC) and her American partner Irina Falconi gave the defending champions, Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta, all they could handle before falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
