21-year-old Canadian comes up short in a third set tiebreak in Madrid

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) took 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer to a third set tiebreak, but ultimately came up short in his second round match on Wednesday at the Mutua Madrid Open, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event.

Federer defeated Raonic 4-6, 7-5, 7-6(4) in a two hour, 13 minute high quality match that featured great tennis from both players. The 21-year-old Canadian won twelve straight points to take a one set lead just like he had done in his first meeting against Federer at Indian Wells in March. Raonic won 100 percent of his first serve points in the opening set and played 44 points before losing a first serve point midway through the second set. Federer finally broke through on the Raonic serve at 6-5 in the second set, playing a virtually flawless game to send the match into a decisive third set.

Federer saved three break points in the final frame and had the advantage of serving first, but Raonic held his own each time of asking to force the match to be fittingly decided in a tiebreak. The Swiss jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Raonic was able to get the tiebreak back on serve. At 4-5, he missed a put away forehand that gave Federer two match points. He converted his first chance with a return winner to book a spot in the third round.

Raonic finished the match with 21 aces and won more overall points than Federer (103-99), but the Swiss was at his best for the important points. Raonic’s next tournament will be the Rome Masters 1000 event which begins next week.
