After reaching the Round of 16 at Roland-Garros in 2009 where she fell to Serena Williams, Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC) tried to repeat that feat on Friday at the tennis season’s second Grand Slam event in Paris.

The task would be difficult going up against the World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka. After many hours waiting in the wings and a court changes, the two players appeared on Court 1 at 7:45 p.m. local time. They broke eachother to start the match and held serve until 4-4 when Azarenka showed her experience on the important points to come away with the opening set 6-4.

A similar scenario played itself out in the second set and the Belarusian posted a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets victory. This is the
second year in a row that Wozniak has been knocked out of Roland-Garros by the World No. 1 after losing to Caroline Wozniacki last year. Wozniak will now head to Austria to play a WTA International Series event the week of June 11.

Milos Raonic (Thornhill, ON) is the last Canadian still alive in French Open singles. He will take on Juan Monaco of Argentina in the third round on Saturday. The match is scheduled for fourth on Court 2.
