Daniel Nestor Reaches Men’s Doubles Final

Filip Peliwo (Vancouver) has advanced into his second consecutive junior Slam semifinal after he defeated American Noah Rubin 6-4, 6-1 in the quarter-finals of the Junior French Open in Paris on Thursday.

A tightly-contested match for the first eight games, Peliwo took control at the 4-4 mark to easily nab the quarter-final triumph. The No. 5 seed, who was a finalist at the Junior Australian Open in January, will next take on No. 11 Adam Pavlasek of the Czech Republic, who on Thursday eliminated the world’s No. 1 male junior player Luke Saville in straight sets. The two competitors have never played each other before.

In doubles quarter-final action, Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, Que.) and her American partner, Taylor Townsend, eliminated Italy’s Camilla Rosatello and Romanian Ioana Loredana Rosca 6-0, 6-3. Bouchard already has one under-18 doubles Slam crown to her name, as she captured the Junior Wimbledon title in 2011 with Grace Min of the United States. In the semifinals, the No. 1 team will play No. 6 seeds Montserrat Gonzalez of Paraguay and Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia.

Francoise Abanda (Montreal) was unable to join her fellow Canadians in the semifinals, as she and American Sachia Vickery were defeated by Gonzalez and Haddad Maia 6-1, 3-6, 10-6.

Both Peliwo and Bouchard’s semifinal matches will take place at Roland Garros on Friday.

Nestor Reaches Men’s Doubles Final

Daniel Nestor (Toronto) is one win away from capturing his third consecutive French Open title after he and Max Mirnyi defeated Italian pair Daniele Bracciali and Potito Starace 6-3, 6-4 in the semifinals on Thursday.

In the final, Nestor and Mirnyi will battle No. 2 seeds Bob and Mike Bryan of the United States. The two best pairs on the ATP World Tour have only clashed once in 2012 so far, with the twins beating the Canadian-Belarusian team in the Monte-Carlo Masters final in April.

The No. 1-ranked duo captured the Roland Garros trophy together last year by besting Juan Sebastien Cabal and Eduardo Schwank in the final. Nestor also won the clay Slam two years ago with then-partner Nenad Zimonjic. The 39-year-old, who reached the Australian Open semifinals in January, has seven Slams to his name and has not gone a season without winning a major since 2006.

The championship match will take place on Saturday following the women’s singles final.
