Bouchard, Dabrowski, Dubois and Fichman will travel to Colombia for Americas zonal event

Tennis Canada announced Tuesday the names of the players slated to compete in the Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Americas Zone Group I matches to be held on clay in Medellin, Colombia from February 6-9, 2013.

Eugenie Bouchard (Westmount, QC), Gabriela Dabrowski (Ottawa, ON), Stéphanie Dubois (Laval, QC), and Sharon Fichman (Toronto, ON) have been chosen to represent Canada by team captain Sylvain Bruneau.

“Our team has a good mix of experience and youth,” said Bruneau. “The girls are very motivated to get Canada back into a World Group II play-off. I believe that this group is up to the challenge that awaits us in Colombia.”

Bouchard made her Fed Cup debut in 2011 against Slovenia in a World Group II playoff tie and won her first singles match in a 3-2 loss for Canada. The 18-year-old made history at Junior Wimbledon last summer, becoming the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. Bouchard also won four titles on the ITF Pro Circuit in 2012 and currently sits at no. 145 on the WTA rankings.

Dabrowski will be making her first appearance on the Miele Canadian Fed Cup team in Medellin. The 20-year-old is a former junior Orange Bowl champion and has won five ITF doubles crowns in her career, including two last season. She is currently ranked a career-high no. 310 in singles and no. 134 in doubles.

Dubois is the veteran of this Canadian squad as she prepares to compete in the 23rd Fed Cup tie of her career. The 26-year-old has maintained a 22-10 record since making her debut in 2004 with 14 of her victories coming on clay. Dubois sits at no. 138 on the WTA singles rankings.

Fichman, 22 years old, has earned 15 victories compared to just five losses since making her Fed Cup debut in 2005. She also boasts a 12-3 record in matches played on clay. She currently sits at no. 152 in singles and no. 146 in doubles on the world rankings.

Still recovering from a shoulder injury she suffered last September, Aleksandra Wozniak (Blainville, QC), Canada’s no. 1 singles player, is not available to represent her country in Medellin.

In 2012, Canada finished fourth in the Americas Zone Group I event and therefore kept their place in the group for 2013. Canada has been placed in group A with Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. Group B has Brazil, Chile, Mexico, and Paraguay. The winners of each group in the round robin format will face off for the chance to take part in a World Group II play-off tie in April 2013 while the two lowest ranking teams will be relegated to Group II of the Americas Zone in 2014.
