Cops for Cancer was born in 1994, when Sergeant Gary Goulet, of the Edmonton Police Service, met a 5-year-old boy who had cancer. Goulet requested the meeting after learning that the boy was being ridiculed at school because of his hair loss due to chemotherapy. Goulet was so moved by the boy’s story that he decided to do something. Goulet gathered a group of Edmonton officers, who were willing to shave their own heads, and they joined the boy in school to show kids that being bald was cool.
Peel Regional Police has been a strong supporter of Cops for Cancer for several years. Many members of Peel Regional Police have been touched by cancer, either personally or through loved ones and colleagues. In response, every year the men and women of Peel Police join their colleagues across the country and volunteer to shave their heads. This is not only in support of cancer research, but is also a symbolic gesture of their support for those with cancer, who lose their own hair as a result of aggressive cancer treatments.
To date, their combined efforts have raised over $500,000.00.
On Saturday, April 10, 2010, between 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., members of Peel Regional Police, and other emergency services personnel, will gather at Centre Court at the Square One Shopping Centre in Mississauga. Members of the public are invited to attend and lend their support for the sponsored participants, as they have their heads shaved.
This year, one of the participants will be Deputy Chief Jennifer Evans.
Deputy Chief Evans has set a personal goal of raising $10,000.00 and needs the community’s support in order to reach this goal. To sponsor Deputy Chief Evans, please click on the following link:
