An intimate and state of the art performance venue, Markham Theatre has become a favoured destination for many Jazz giants touring the world today.  This season, we are proud to present Jazz trumpeter extraordinaire Arturo Sandoval who will transport audiences back to the golden age of jazz when the legendary Dizzy Gillespie reigned. Arturo Sandoval – “A Tribute to my friend Dizzy Gillespie” takes place on Saturday, March 3rd at 8:00pm. Dee Dee Bridgewater is at the very top of the female jazz scene and is often referred to as an heiress of the great Ella Fitzgerald. This versatile, vivacious musician brings her stunning and award winning tribute to Billie Holiday to the theatre at 8:00pm on Wednesday, March 21st. To Billie with Love. A Celebration of “Lady Day” features selections from Dee Dee’s CD recording and theatrical performances based on Holiday’s autobiography, Lady Sings the Blues.  Rounding out this illustrious line-up, Chick Corea offers a rare solo piano performance on Tuesday, April 3 also at 8:00pm.  One of only two Canadian stops on his international tour, this concert is an exclusive Ontario appearance

Cuban-born trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was deeply influenced by the music of Gillespie and was actually discovered by Dizzy on his 1977 tour through Cuba. Gillespie was first bebop jazz musician to develop Afro-Cuban rhythms and melodies into jazz.  During this world tour, multiple Grammy-winning trumpeter Arturo Sandoval explores the music of Dizzy Gillespie from songs like “Manteca” and “Tin Tin Deo” to great bebop classics like “Salt Peanuts” and “Night in Tunisia.”  As one of the world’s best trumpeters and as a former protégé, collaborator and friend of Gillespie’s, Sandoval is the only artist with the chops, musical prowess and high-powered notes to properly pay tribute to the incomparable Dizzy.

One of the best known jazz singers of her generation, Dee Dee Bridgewater is an award-winning jazz singer, actor and entertainer with extraordinary range and versatility. Having won a coveted Broadway Tony award and two GRAMMYS, Bridgewater can bring music to life in ways that are difficult to imagine until you hear her mind-blowing vocal technique.   She is able to scat, soar and moan like none other and brings the dynamic array of her voice to the music of Billie Holiday. Nominated for the Laurence Olivier award for her tour-de-force portrayal of Lady Day in Stephen Stahl’s show about Billie, Bridgewater recorded an album demonstrating her fine understanding and beautiful interpretations of Holiday’s work. Although Bridgewater can do a bang-on impersonation of Holiday, her versions are versatile, dynamic and demonstrate that the best tribute to an artist is to re-interpret their classic songs.

A DownBeat Hall of Famer, 16-time Grammy winner and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, Chick Corea has attained “living legend” status after four decades of unparalleled creativity and an artistic output that is simply staggering.  A major force in the evolution of modern jazz, Chick Corea’s career is the stuff of jazz lore, an amalgamation of influential, limit-stretching musical experiences which have filled many a page in 20th century music history encyclopedias. Armando Anthony “Chick” Corea is a multiple Grammy Award winning American jazz pianist, keyboardist, drummer, and composer. From an early age, he worked with great players, such as Stan Getz and Herbie Mann and Miles Davis.  He later changed direction and embraced the Avante Garde style jazz in the quartet Circle and soon formed the legendary group Return to Forever. They started off playing a jazz-Latin fusion, but he later changed sidemen and brought Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, and Al DiMeola, and they became a high-energy rock-fusion band.
