Vintage Silent Films and Live Gypsy Swing in Cinema Vivant

Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium (Pasadena, CA)

Caltech’s Beckman Auditorium will be transported to 1930s France as the Hot Club of San Francisco (HCSF) churns out gypsy jazz music that matches every action in three vintage silent films. Celebrating the sounds of the famous Hot Club de France, HCSF evokes the smoky clubs and refined lounges of Paris with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from their 11 albums. In Cinema Vivant, HCSF’s live score adds depth and excitement to a trio of films from the early 1900s. The Cameraman’s Revenge, a charming piece about the marital troubles of beetles, and The Mascot, an adventure story about lost toys, are both examples of the trailblazing work of Ladislaw Starewicz, who pioneered stop-action animation before World War I. Whimsical comedy There It Is, by Charley Bowers, revolutionized the industry in the 1920s by combining animation with live action to tell the story of a mysterious occurrence investigated by Scotland Yard. This is a rare chance to see groundbreaking vintage filmwork accompanied by the music of "one of the most cohesive and entertaining Gypsy swing bands in the United States."
